Training - Medical - Safety
Pre Event Training.
If you are in any doubt as to your ability to participate in the cycle challenge or have not done regular exercise, it is strongly recommended you have a medical check-up prior to the event.
To make the most of the day, we recommend you undertake a proper training program to prepare for the event.
SAFETY ON THE DAY (All Festival Events)
The Festival cycle course is held on public roads that, although under traffic management conditions, there may be emergency or other vehicle traffic using the roads. Consequently it is important that participants exercise extreme caution at all times and ride in a protective manner being aware of what is happening around them. The use of the Albert Park road course is a “privilege” for all cyclists. Please use this opportunity to reinforce a “Cycling Code of Practice”. By implementing common courtesy and fellow rider & traffic harmony, you will maximise our opportunity to return next year.
Stay safe when riding
For your safety as well as for the safety of others , please implement the following safety tips:
- Abide by the road rules. This includes, but is not limited to, remaining to one side of the roadways at all times, unless passing slower riders.
- It is essential that all cyclists follow ALL police and traffic management directives during the event.
- An Australian Standard helmet is compulsory and must be securely fastened during the entire ride.
- Use hand signals if changing your riding line or stopping.
- Entrants should only ride side-by-side where there is enough room left for other cyclists to pass.
- Riders should always look behind before pulling out to pass another rider.
- It is the rider's responsibility to follow the sign posted course.
- Your bike must be mechanically sound with both front & rear brakes in working order.
- Wear bright clothing that increases your visibility to other roads users.
- Remember to drink plenty of water and to eat healthy food before, during and after the event.
Medical Recommendations
Medical staff have the ultimate and final authority to remove a competitor from the event if the participant is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the event without risk of serious injury. To prevent this from happening, the event organizers recommend the following:
- Drink plenty of fluid before and during the event
- If you are in any doubt as to your ability to participate in the cycle challenge or have not done much regular exercise, it is strongly recommended you have a medical check-up prior to the event
- Undertake a proper training program to prepare for the event
